Video: Emergency shelter in Wiesenstraße throws out Syrian refugee woman at night

International Women Space got to know Viviana when she was still living the emergency shelter (Lager) at the Wiesenstraße, in Wedding, Berlin. On te 29th of January we went to the Notunterkunft to have a coffee with Viviana and see how she was. The moment we met, Viviana was already showing signs of stress. No wonder, she was one of the few women living in a shared space of a former Basketball Hall with 200 men having only her bed as a place of her own.

The so-called Refugees are arriving to Berlin in numbers that the state seems unable to cope with. The public is split in its opinion. Being aware of the crisis situation, what can artists bring to the discussion? Where can they engage? How could they make a difference?

One of the things we can do, is to try to give a voice back to us, the people, to give ourselves a chance to understand what we are all living, and most of all to give ourselves a chance to experience it together.

We decided to give voices to humans and humanity, to make the people appear and the empty slogans disappear. We think the festival format is best to allow as much dialogue as possible to emerge. Within the rich program of exhibitions, performances, live music, talks, films and more throughout Neukölln, there will be plenty of chances for everyone to create together. Continue reading
